A Culinary Journey in Komagane City: Exploring Naito Chili Pepper and Traditional Craftsmanship

Last week, we had the incredible opportunity to visit the picturesque Komagane City in Nagano Prefecture. As we explored the vast expanse of fields, rice paddies, and mountains, we couldn’t help but be in awe of the sheer beauty of the landscape. But it wasn’t just the natural scenery that captivated us; it was the harmonious blend of traditional craftsmanship and culinary culture that truly made this place special.

Naito Chili Pepper

Encounter with Tradition

One of the first things that caught our attention was the Naito Chili Pepper, a native chili pepper with a fascinating history. According to Mr. Miyazawa, a local resident, the Naito Chili Pepper was brought to Edo (now Tokyo) by the lord of Takato, who cultivated it in the vicinity of Takato. This chili pepper has its roots in the Edo period when the Naito family, lords of Shinano Takato, had a field called “geyashiki” in what is now Shinjuku Gyoen.

Unlike the fiery taste of red pepper, the Naito Chili Pepper offers a milder

spiciness that is complemented by its fragrance, umami, richness, and unique flavor profile. It is no wonder that this chili pepper is highly regarded and widely used in the region, particularly in the making of soba noodles. This encounter with the Naito Chili Pepper was not only a culinary delight but also a reminder of the rich history and traditions that are deeply ingrained in the food culture of Shinshu (Nagano).

Our journey through Komagane City was not only about culinary discoveries but also about appreciating the region’s traditional craftsmanship. In addition to the craftsmanship, we also learned about the facilities for processing soba and wheat. I reserved a Soba Making Experience so that I can share it here in the future.

Life Style

As we chatted with the locals, it became evident that they not only worked hard but also cherished their way of life. The deep connection with nature and the appreciation for the bounties it provides were palpable. It was a reminder that a life in harmony with nature is not only fulfilling but also rewarding.

Our culinary journey through Komagane City was a true delight. From the enchanting Naito Chili Pepper to the traditional craftsmanship and the rich history behind it, every step of the way was filled with awe and appreciation. It was a glimpse into an idyllic way of life that seamlessly integrates with nature, and it left us with a deep sense of gratitude for the region’s culinary treasures.

Komagane City is a hidden gem that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, traditional craftsmanship, and culinary delights. It is a place where history, culture, and nature come together to create an unforgettable experience. Whether you are a food enthusiast, a nature lover, or someone who appreciates the beauty of traditional craftsmanship, Komagane City is a destination that should not be missed.
